Day 18 - Frómista to Carrion de los Condes

Writer's picture: Robin RudwickRobin Rudwick

Today's walk started at 0550. We had a bit of trouble finding our way today. The Yellow Arrow of Santiago was somehow hard to find. We decided to take a more scenic route by a river

This was all very well but we didn't take into account the mosquitoes. Where there's irrigation systems, there's slow moving water and mosquitoes. The initial part of the route was next to a road but traffic was quiet. We passed an interesting structure at a campsite.

You get some idea of the scale from the second picture.

They really like their murals here.

The first time we saw this type of sign. The way itself was stark and straight, running through irrigated fields of cereal. I worked out that the irrigation system was gravity fed for simplicity. But this implied a lot of precision in planning the layout.

Here is the obligatory bridge picture over the river, full of croaking frogs.

Even some of the manhole covers en route had the Camino shell.

We found this bodega on the way in to Villacázar de Sirga. I'm thinking this was used as a wine storage place.

I love this style of door. There were many like this in town.

When we got to Villacázar, we grabbed some breakfast and bumped into Paul and Rose. We drank more coffee whilst waiting for the church to open. Apparently this is a fine example of a Templar Church.

More Street art, rather spoiled by the background car.

Here is a memorial to someone who never made it to walk the Camino.

The walk out of town was again beside the road. Not very pleasant, but not that much traffic. It was hot. It was another 'head down, grind it out' walk.

These brass plaques are set into the pavement in Carrion de los Condes.

And a giant mosaic on the way into town.

And here we are in the Hostal Santiago, having done our laundry - everything except what we are wearing now. We've been to the supermarket for bread and cheese. I was taken with these pigs ears, Ruth not so much.
