We were staying at Gite Bidean. The manager Joe, was a Thai and very helpful. I'd recommend this place if you're ever passing through St. Jean.

And this was Joe.
We left at 0715, aiming to take about 2 hours to go 8km. It was actually 9.5km but increasing altitude by 500km. It doesn't sound a lot but is very different in 27°C heat. It actually took 2 hours 45 minutes. In Wokingham, carrying the same packs, it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Most people here are going on to Rancevilles, which is another 19km distant and another 500m in altitude.
The next picture will give an idea of how far we've travelled.

Many walkers had problems about half way up this path, which was a set of climbing switch backs. This guy is planning to walk through to Rancevilles, with his son, but carrying the pack all the way. I wish him luck.

We are now at Refuge Orisson and we're staying here for the night. Most people are moving on to Roncesvalles, which is another 19km and 700 km climb in 32°C. And the rest of the walkers are headed off there. I say 'Buen Camino' to them. Rancevilles is far left on the diagram above.
