Day 20 - Ledigos to Bercianos part 1

Writer's picture: Robin RudwickRobin Rudwick

We had fun escaping from the hostel. We spoke to one of 3 American guys, who was trying to find a Jacotrans envelope. Jacotrans are one of the companies that shipbags from Albergue to Albergue for 5€. Unfortunately, they were all locked up in the bar.

We left him to it and left at 0550. I am going to include a gallery of sunrise shots as the sky was incredible this morning. They were all taken in a 15 minute period as we walking along.

I'll have to find out more about this guy Jaques de Molay. He was a Templar and I know there was was a 'night of the long knives' where the Templars were persecuted and their power destroyed. The Templars duty had been to protect pilgrims on their various pilgrimages within Europe and the Holy Land. But they amassed wealth and power... And became a threat to both Kings and the Church.

This village was very interesting in that it had bodegas cut into this hill. The next photograph will explain it better than I can

If you look at the first photo in this gallery, you will see where the roof has collapsed leaving just the frontage. Remember that they were dug into a clay hill and the excavated clay dumped on top. It was sometimes hauled up through the chimney openings. The exposed clay was then left to harden. There were no internal ceiling supports. This was casual building, with no regulation. So no tap dancing on the roof. As you can see, some are well maintained and still in use.

And if you look closely, you can see a seat at the top, so you can watch the sunset, with a glass of wine from your bodega!

We were walking to

This place is Casa Barrunta. The service was good, the coffee was great and the food was lovely. And they had Swallows nesting there.

And I forgot to pay! About a 1km later I remembered. So we had to walk back, passing folk and explaining why. I went in and explained what had happened. The patrón said that I was 'a good man'. I said I was walking the Camino and it was the right thing to do. His wife gave me a sandwich to take on our journey. They were both happy that I had paid my debt, as was I . So good feelings all round.

Woohoo, under 400k to go.

Back to Spin Classes

I've just started back at spinning classes. I've completed two and they were hard. They last for 45 minutes and are intense. At the end...

Practical Things I learned on the Camino

This journey is a marathon and not a sprint. Rest days are important! It's a Pilgrimage, not a route march. Take care of blisters as soon...
