Day 8 - in Viana

Writer's picture: Robin RudwickRobin Rudwick

We stayed in Viana after a windey, uppy - downy journey here after leaving Lorna and Jane in Torres del Rio. Ruth was still having problems with her foot, but it was not so bad. There were these strange stone houses, more like single room caves atop some of the vineyards. We later found out that they were there for people to watch overnight for frost on the vines.

We stopped for a snack of tortilla and cans of Orangina Type drink at Casa Lucia

Nice place but the guy almost had to use his fingers to count.

This is the first place we stopped in Viana. The church bells were ringing so it was time for a beer.

Very soon after we heard a brass band playing and followed them out to a terrace overlooking the the valley below.

They were playing for a wedding.

This was the text on this Monument. Make of it what you will.

But having found our hostel, finished our washing, we then went back into town. We met up with Lorna and Jane, Chris and Deb, Stefan (linguist who spoke 10 languages, came from Prague, but lived in Lichtenstein) Kyle (American from Seattle), unknown French woman, two Swedes and that was it. We were outside the main church but had to move because a funeral procession was ending up at the church. The local tramp (homeless person) had to leave the church entrance. From inside the bar, we could see that he was well known and tolerated.

Anyway, time for dinner, which was a Pilgrims menu for me ( lentils and chorizo, chips and grilled fish, strawberries and cream). Plus pasta bolognese for Ruth and she ate my strawberries.
