Day25 - Astorga to Rabanal

Writer's picture: Robin RudwickRobin Rudwick

Thu 16th June 2022

As it was going to hit 35°C today, it was up early and out the door by 0530.

What you see are buildings on our way out of town: local government, our hotel, cathedral, Gaudí building and 3 pictures of a church on the way.

We also passed this place, a carnicería, selling mainly pork based products.

We walked out of town, keeping an eye on the sunrise.

Then we saw this and had to investigate.

Almost opposite this place was

Unfortunately, it was not yet open. We checked the menu.

Which look good. When you have a son called Chris, these things are important!

We were back onto bright red clay soil.

Looking back, you could see the cathedral in Astorga, just...

We stopped for coffee in Santa Catalina.

The Albergue was very nice

Nice Camino stencil...

Many people seem to have memorials along the Camino, often just a name, no real detail. But maybe that's enough.

The cowboy bar was an oddity. Its been here since the 1990's. And hasn't had a lick of paint or maintenance since then. But I liked it.

Today's church shot. I don't think we have a bridge today.

We stopped at a non existent food stop and ate our own tapas.

Which was chorizo on Tuc biscuits! With an orange and water - luxury.

Another helpful message on the way.

We're staying in this town.

Fancy, tiny church in town.

Susan, a lovely American lady, originally from the Black Hills of Dakota. We had a good talk about teepees and the use of walking poles. I'm still not sold on them.

Alburgue across the road from ours. Nice place for a beer.

Ruth spotted the Stepford Twins in town. They really do exist...

My lunch - the Super Pilgrim burger, which was great. Chips were OK. But not the triple cooked ones, I'm used to at home. Still, Americans on the next table were impressed.

Where we were staying, which was very hot and noisy overnight. But we washed everything we could, in their long programme washing machine.

Best meal of the trip. Local speciality cassoulet style but served without soupy stuff and a new beer, finally!

Practical Things I learned on the Camino

This journey is a marathon and not a sprint. Rest days are important! It's a Pilgrimage, not a route march. Take care of blisters as soon...
