19/06/22 Sunday

Early morning start

We walked past the launderette, an important place in a Pilgrims life.

And crossed the bridge

That's Ruth on the bridge. The journey today very much followed the road. But the road seemed to have been sidelined by a major highway. So traffic was quiet. But we tracked the new motorway at a lower point in the valley. The going was fairly easy and we sometimes followed tracks between vineyards. We passed a sculptor's workshop

We later saw this guy's work on a bridge.

any of the buildings were delapidated. This building had a stone ground floor and a busted up adobé first floor, with wall repairs in the local hollow brickwork.

We passed this lovely castle Type house in Villafranca.

We also had coffee and cake (Ruth), plus tortilla (Robin) and texted home to wish Tom a Happy birthday and great Fathers Day.

Two examples of building in Villafranca...

Three examples of that sculptor's work...

Another delapidated but worthy of renovation building

On the outskirts of Trabadelo we saw heaps of tree trunks, scrap wood and stacks of timber by the side of the road. Then found a tiny saw mill in the village.

Whilst walking through this ribbon village we came across this

We initially thought it was associated with a wedding, but tracked the flower displays up to the church. Apparently it was a Corpus Christi festival.

The church was quite simple but more real than some of the grand churches and cathedrals I've been in on this trip. And we also met the little old lady responsible for the flower decorations on the pavement.

Spooky picture of the week...

I've said before that road sign distances can be suspect. We had this..

before we got to this

Check the distances.

Ruth on the bridge into Vega de Valcarce.

There's not much to say about our destination today. Two bars, three ATMs, one supermarket, decent bedroom with balcony, stream outside. I saw a guy fly fishing in the stream which looked fun. The stream was so clear.

We wandered past the 3 ATMs to the 2nd bar. We sat outside as there was a dysfunctional family in there. Craig and Jana turned up. They were a nomadic American-Aussie couple. They had cycled across the Meseta. Jana could only walk about 15k per day. They were mixing up bus, taxi and foot to get the distance each day. Jana was planning to ride a horse up to O Cobreiro. Or rather sit on a horse and be shaken up the hill. We left that bar as they served no food. We ate across the road from the room. The bar owner played loud TV or Boney M's Greatest Hits. The food was typical Menu of the day. Not so bad but not so great.
