Day36 O Pedrosa to Santiago de Compostela

Writer's picture: Robin RudwickRobin Rudwick

27/06/22 Monday

It was with an aching left leg that we set foot on trail at 0530. We wanted to get into Santiago early to sort our Compostela and maybe get to the 1200 Pilgrims Mass at the Cathedral.

It was cold and we weren't hanging around.

Ruth remembered this sculpture from her las trip. She said it was cleaner, without the stuff at the base and she was skinnier then...

I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but the Spanish seem to have a thing about sprung bed bases being best used as fencing material. Yes, I mentioned it in Sarria, where the towns ancient Monument was guarded by a bed base.

Ruth remembered this church, mostly because of the grave vaults and the bar opened a few metres down the slope. That was our first coffee stop.

We passed a large barracks type place on the outskirts of Santiago. This was around Monte do Grosso, where yoget views down to Santiago. We could have gone to see the Pilgrim statues pointing the way to Santiago but my leg was playing up. So you'll have to make do with some pictures.

This picture is of one of the Templars.

Nice sculpture on the way into Santiago.

We passed this hanging from a tree. Food for thought...

We stopped at Cafe Londres and had eggs and bacon for breakfast. And it was very nice!

We were finally in Santiago, at the Cathedral. We listened to the Galician piper and then booked into the hotel, next to the cathedral. Then visit the Compostela office. Show our barcodes, get a ticket and in less than 20 minutes of talking to a nice lady about our Camino, I'm out with a certificate or Compostela.

Then it's back to the Cathedral to catch the 12.00 Mass. The Mass is ok, probably better if you're RC. They have a great singer.

But then we realise they will be swinging the incense burner.

I've got a 2 minute video of this that I'll need to edit down.

This is the hotel room. Very nice....

This Ruth being terrified by a monster seafood Platter. She's got a thing about razor clams. We had to order some bread as there wasn't enough food- possibly. Trust me, it was brilliant. Possibly the best meal yet. For a town kilometres from the sea, the seafood is brilliant.

Statue of St. James in our Hospideria, or hotel!

Picture of us in front of the cathedral. Apparently it's the picture you 'Have to take'. You can see what I think of that.

Anyway, we wandered around town, found where the bus station was, where to buy guns, and then had a few drinks people watching. We discussed why some bars were more successful than others. We need to research this more. We ended up at a craft beer bar.

The beer, pinchos and wine were great. We got chatting to some ladies from Yorkshire who had walked and bloated the Camino Portugues and loved it. This was a decent bar and we might go back. Unfortunately they did not have 'Flying Monkey' on tap this night.

Practical Things I learned on the Camino

This journey is a marathon and not a sprint. Rest days are important! It's a Pilgrimage, not a route march. Take care of blisters as soon...
